We work with customers in the construction, manufacturing, and logistics industries, and we do a lot of pallet deliveries. Getting them from A to B on time means customers need to give us more shipping information than for usual consignments. For example, we need to know if they’re using standard 1,200mm by 1,000 mm pallets, a 1,200 mm by 800 mm Euro pallet or something else; the exact weight and dimensions; and whether it’s leaving the UK. What Are the Standard UK Pallet Dimensions?
Standard UK pallets measure 1,200mm long by 1,000mm wide and weigh between 15 kg and 25 kg, though a heavy-duty or rental ones can weigh up to 30kg. There are other sizes and weights – see table below – but the majority are standard UK pallets. It’s important to know the pallet’s weight as:
- It gives you an accurate overall weight rather than a net (cargo) weight
- Weight will help determine the type of vehicle required and keep the delivery within legal limits
- It can mean the difference between needing a pump truck, a tail lift or a forklift. Getting this wrong is a great way to ensure a delayed or failed delivery

These are a guide, and it’s always best to discuss your requirements with your courier. A few months ago, we were asked to quote for a standard pallet delivery that weighed just over 220kg, so fine for a pump truck. But because the consignment, a blancher for a food manufacturer, had a 110mm overhang, we had to make sure they had a forklift to load it. Without the exact dimensions, this would most likely have been a delayed delivery.
When getting a same-day pallet delivery quote, ensure you have the load’s dimensions, including height, width and the loaded weight. Take these measurements when the consignment is ready to go. This matters as you’ll need to include packaging, pallet collars, wrap, and protective boards. Never guess the weight, as incorrect weights can cause delays, accidents, legal and insurance issues, and cancellations.
Do You Need A Tail-Lift Or Forklift?
Deliveries have a collection point and a delivery point, and palletised consignments need handling at both ends. To do this, a courier needs to know whether there’s a forklift at both ends or whether they need a vehicle with a tail-lift and a pallet truck. The question is, when is a forklift required and when will a tail-lift do?
A forklift is usually required for heavier and longer loads. If this is the case, when booking a courier, it’s important to let them know:
- A forklift is available at collection
- A forklift is available at delivery
- If the site has a dock-level loading bay
- If the forklift can safely handle the pallet’s weight – this shouldn’t be a problem, as most forklifts can carry between 1,000 and 5,000 kg loads
- If loading or unloading needs to take place from the side of the vehicle, in which case a van with a side door or a curtain-side lorry will be required
- If a qualified forklift operator will be available when the consignment arrives. Many same-day pallet deliveries occur outside working hours, so this can be an issue
A tail-lift is required when there’s no forklift, loading bay or qualified driver available. Deliveries using tail-lifts require:
- Firm, level ground
- Sufficient access space behind the vehicle
- Safe vehicle access
- A surface suitable for a pallet truck – grass, wet ground, kerbs, slopes, and gravel can all make pallet trucks unusable
- A pallet that fits safely on the tail-lift
- A load within the equipment’s rated capacity – a manual pallet truck can carry 2,500kg, but for health and safety reasons, 750kg is the recommended maximum for one person to handle
- A clear route between the vehicle and the agreed unloading point
While there’s no single safe maximum weight covering every tail-lift delivery, the Road Haulage Association is clear that weather, distance, and gradients must be factored into tail-lift deliveries. Some couriers impose their own limits, often between 500kg and 1,000kg. Our fleet includes HGVs with tail-lifts that can take 4,000kg loads with truck-mounted forklifts that can carry up to 4,500kg; large loads using tail-lifts aren’t a problem. Occasionally, super large loads, especially long ones, will require two forklifts and side access.
Which Vehicle Is Best for Same-Day Pallet Delivery?
While a courier will always choose the smallest vehicle to keep costs down, they must consider:
- Does the vehicle have a large enough payload
- Is there sufficient internal space
- Is there enough space for loading and unloading
- Is there enough space for required equipment, e.g. a pallet truck

Client: A Vegetable Processing Firm In King’s Lynn
One of the UK’s largest processors and freezers of fresh vegetables, with lines running 24/7 during the summer, had a problem with a blancher, a machine that par-boils veg before freezing. What We Did
We took a call at 6 am asking if we could collect a replacement part at 8 am from the suppliers in Poole and deliver it to them. How To Prepare And Secure A Pallet For Delivery
Appropriate packaging is essential for safe delivery, and in the case of a pallet that means:
1. Ensure the pallet is in good condition and check that it’s:
- The right size and strength for the load
- Dry and free from contamination
- Not cracked, rotten, splintered or with broken/missing slats or blocks
- Suitable for forklift or pallet-truck handling
2. Distribute the weight evenly:
- Position the load centrally
- Spread its weight across the pallet
- Place heavier items on the bottom and lighter ones above
3. Avoid overhanging loads:
- Avoid having anything hanging over the edge of the palate as it can cause issues with loading and unloading and with storage in the vehicle
4. Build a stable load:
- Stack palletised boxes in interlocking layers. Fill gaps so that the load cannot move while being moved
- Avoid creating a top-heavy pallet or placing a narrow heavy item on an unsuitable base
5. Protect edges and vulnerable areas:
- Pack it using corner protectors, edge boards, cushioning, pallet collars, wrap, and/or a suitable crate where necessary
- Machinery must be immobilised and protected against movement, vibration and contact with other surfaces
6. Wrap the pallet to its base
- Apply stretch wrap around the load and the pallet base so that the goods are secured to the pallet. Start at the bottom, work up with overlapping layers and then wrap back down. Do not rely on light shrink wrap to secure a heavy industrial load. We’ve seen loads spill in loading and unloading as weak/domestic wrap has been applied
7. Use straps:
- Heavy, tall or irregular goods may need ratchet straps, polypropylene banding or steel strapping, and products should be protected using edge guards
8. Label the pallet clearly with:
- Collection reference
- Recipient’s name
- Delivery address
- Contact telephone number
- Pallet count, such as “1 of 3”
- Handling instructions
- Any legally required hazard information
9. Declare special goods:
Tell the courier in advance if the pallet contains:
- Hazardous goods
- Batteries
- Chemicals
- Liquids
- Food or temperature-sensitive products
- High-value goods
- Fragile machinery
- Restricted or regulated items
